One thing I learned from my sea trials was that I needed a way to organize things inside the cabin. Otherwise it is just a large pit that you toss your gear into to get lost. Oh, you can find it, but how much time are you going to waste? The vibrations you get from operating a boat will quickly make a mix, if not a mess of anything not secured or properly stored away.

I picked up some lightweight chain from the hardware store, and I am opening up one of the links using a chisel as a wedge.

I hooked on an eyebolt...

...and then closed the link with a pair of pliers.

I glued a block to the ceiling of the cabin to accept the eyebolt...

...from which hangs these lightweight shelves. For whatever reason, I wanted to be able to have the ability to remove the shelves. I now just have to unscrew several bolts, and the whole thing comes right out. Notice that I am becoming weight conscious-there are 24 one-inch lightening holes cut through each shelf.

Here is a close up of how the bottom shelf is supported by the top shelf.

Detail of how the shelf is fastened to the sides of the cabin. Notice that the wood blocks are secured by a mixture of epoxy and wood flour. Looks like peanut butter! I have storage ahead of bulkhead 4 and also on bulkhead 11. Everything else gets bagged and placed to starboard, while my sleeping gear goes to port. A plastic narrow rectangular flowerpot also helps to keep things organized inside the cabin. What? I found it; we like free things.

The shelf unit works very well. Some items still hop over the "fiddles", and I may yet add in some rope barriers between the shelves and the ceiling.
